Movement
Movement is also important to memory representation because sensing it requires visual imagery. Carefully think about the following question: Without memory could we observe movement? Since the existence of movement requires memorable observance, it requires that our minds remember an image of a first frame... then remember an image of the next frame and that we imagine a gradual change between the frames. This visual imagery involves our seeing the image between the frames in our mind as though the image were there when, in fact, it is not. Visual Imagery is your sensual interpretation of what you see, hear, feel, smell, or taste.
Visual Imagery
Visual imagery has been utilized by numerous cultural groups from the Greeks, Chinese and Egyptians to religions like Judaism and Hinduism. It is our mind's enhancement to images including visualization, metaphors, story telling, fantasy, game playing, and imagination. It lets us picture what is going on and is our way of examining interpretations, feelings or ideas and is the foundation of dreams and memory. It is the language of emotions.
Our brain is an incredible resource that registers and stores information about everything that happens to us. It stores this information and retrieves the information when we need it. Most of what we experience in life comes into our brains through our visual channel. Therefore, visual imagery and visualization are especially powerful as learning tools.
The Process of Visualization - To visualize, find a quiet place away from distractions. Vividly conceive the detailed scenery, setting and nuances of what you are picturing. The colors you see should be dramatic and bright. Add in sounds associated with what you are picturing such as seaside waves, birds chirping, cars passing, etc. Then add vivid aromas like the smells of honey suckle, the smell of ocean side salt in the air, leather, or other aromas associated with your vision. Then envision touching the items in the scene imagining the textures, temperature, etc of the scene. With your visualization fully on your mind, feel the emotions you will feel in this situation. When you have done these things, let the vision fade and return your mind to the distraction free state. This process can be repeated to visualize things being learned.
